On January the 8th we left Melkbosstrand at 04h00 to start the long drive to the Kgalagadi. The group consists of two vehicles (Land Rover Defender and Cruiser double cab bakkie, with myself, Pieter, Christo, Ali and Chris). It is a long day’s travel and beside filling up for fuel, we push straight through until we almost reached the border.
We pull into the Molopo Lodge for a couple of beers where we met up with Marinus.
Christo & Ali arranged for accommodation at the newly build Kgalagadi Lodge.
10th: We do an early game drive and spend the rest of the day at Mata Mata. Ali braais some pork and potatoes for us. Back at the camp Christo treats us with fillet steak.
Groot Rooivalk/Greater Kestrel
11th: We decided to move our camp to another spot within Rooiputs after a group has left. We spend the day at the camp and in the evening go for a quick game drive.
12th: The day we will remember as the hottest day ever. We decided to go to Twee Rivieren and spend the day at the pool. Back at the camp Chris prepares steak and chips for us. The wind picks up and the little fellows with the pincers and stingers rock up….by the dozens.
13th: We do an early game drive and afterwards pack up and leave for the lodge. Pleasant thunderstorms bring some refreshing coolness together with a spectacular lightning show. Marinus braai some T-bone steaks for us.
14th: We part ways, the Cruiser taking the long way back home while Pieter and myself find lodging in the Vredendal hotel and going further pass Papendorp the next day.
