West Coast Eco Trail – November 2009

A trip up the West Coast to “Brand se baai”

How do you get there?

There are basically 2 ways: Up the coast or more inland through the Namakwaland.

When you go up the coast, you take the West Coast Road (R27) from Cape Town To Veldrif, through to Dwarskersbos, Elandsbay, Lambertsbay,  Doringbay, pass Strandfontein, through Lutzville, turn left and keep on going until you almost drive straight into Namakwa Sands.

If you take the quicker inland route, you start on the N7, go pass Malmesbury, Moorreesburg, Piketberg, over the Piekenierskloof pass, pass Citrusdal, pass Clanwilliam and turn left into Klawer. From there you continue on to Vredendal, go straight on through the main road and the pass the Lutzville turn off on  your left. You continue straight on until you almost drive into Namakwa Sands.

Just before you get to Namakwa Sands there is a sign showing Brand se baai to the right on a gravel road. Continue on the gravel road for about 3.7km, where you will get another marker for “Brand se baai” indicating you to turn left (if you get to the salt mine, you’ve passed the entry point). Continue down this road until run into another track  running along the coast, turn right here. A little later you will pass through the Sout river.

The bay which we selected has the nickname of “Hardslaap“. GPS coords: (S31.23388 E17.83894)

And take down the tire pressure when you leave the gravel road. Things can get ugly quite quickly
