Marcuskraal / Markuskraal – February 2011

A short write up on our trip to Marcuskraal in February 2011

Marcuskraal is situated about 22kms from Citrusdal on the Clanwilliam side. It is a fairly new campsite and trail which opened in April 2010 and is owned by 5th generation farmer Christie Mouton.

Although the camp site is fairly new, it is in very good condition and already well established. The terrain is mostly covered in grass with ample trees providing shade against the harsh sun.

The ablution facilities are top class and was well kept clean during our stay. A lapa with an indoor braai is available should the weather pull an odd one on you.

A refreshing pool is also available should the Cederberg sun become too much for you.

Of the 4×4 trail itself, I can only say good things. It is 24kms long and takes anything from 3 to 5 hours to complete depending on how much in a hurry you are. It is a very scenic route so don’t rush it. I would rate the trail overall as a grade 4, with one section definitely a grade 5 and which should definitely not be attempted without lockers or traction control. It is a technical trail and I would advise using co-drivers to assist. It is probably one of my top 3 trails that I’ve ever been on. Here are some pics off the camp site from one of the lookout points on the trail.

Marcuskraal is a definite must for all camping and 4×4 enthusiasts.
